The LAWorld member for the North and South Carolinas is one of the largest lawfirms in the South Eastern United States.  Founded in 1945 with two attorneys, Maynard Nexsen is now a multi-specialty law firm headquartered in Columbia, South Carolina, with more than 170 attorneys and eight offices.  Each office handles a full range of legal issues and has the strength of the entire firm behind it.

Over the years, the firm has developed a range of legal specialties to meet the growing demands of an increasingly diverse business and commercial client base.  The firm’s mission is to serve clients and community with an exceptional level of legal skills, helping their clients find practical solutions to their legal needs.

The firm’s corporate and business practice covers a wide array of clients and activities.  Their services range from contract reviews and business formations, to control contests, public and private finance, mergers and acquisitions, securities, tax, banking, Sarbanes-Oxley compliance, and highly complex business transactions.  In addition, the firm’s sophisticated health care practice represents hospitals and providers in all aspects of the highly-regulated health-care environment.

The firm has significant experience in all aspects of commercial property and real estate.  Complex transactions include state of the art financing arrangements, innovative residential development structures, governmental incentives, and the navigation of complex zoning and land use regulations, as well as extensive experience in large scale resort development. The firm’s environmental team works intimately with the real estate practice, as does the firm’s construction team, which represents a variety of owners, contractors, design professionals, and insurers.

The intellectual property group assists international clients in obtaining patent, trademark and copyright protection in the USA, and litigating to enforce those rights or defend against claims of infringement.

The firm has a broad litigation practice, frequently representing foreign companies, as well as business and individuals in litigation in the USA.  The litigation environment in the USA is completely unique, and foreign businesses need experienced guidance when asserting claims in American Courts, or defending against claims. The firm’s litigation profile includes antitrust, product liability, business and commercial, contract, insurance, personal injury, construction, employment, professional liability, and real estate.

Maynard Nexsen frequently guides internationally owned companies in locating or expanding capital projects in the Carolinas.  The international team assists with immigration, site selection, investment incentives, and customs matters, as well as joint venture and distribution arrangements.

The firm has extensive experience in all types of employment-related matters, including Title VII, FMLA, ADA, ADEA, covenants not to compete, payment of wages, Workers’ Compensation, and third-party recoveries and wrongful discharge cases.  Several partners are certified specialists in this area.

The firm has a substantial bankruptcy and insolvency practice, with two partners certified as specialists. This team also represents a variety of financial institutions in creditor-debtor, regulatory, banking, and related matters.

The firm has been retained by the Consulate General of Mexico (responsible for the jurisdiction of North and South Carolina, USA) to provide the Consulate, Mexican nationals and businesses in the Carolinas with specialized legal counsel and, as necessary, legal representation in the Carolinas for administrative, civil, family, labor, and immigration law.

Their lawyers speak English, German, French, Japanese and Spanish.
