The new horizons of AI, a regulated opportunity

A regulation has recently been approved with the ambitious and so far unique objective of harmonizing the rules for the introduction, commissioning and use of artificial intelligence systems in the European Union, as well as regulating or banning practices considered to be high risk.

The risk-based approach of the new AI Act regulates activities on three levels of risk: from the lowest, to high (highly regulated), to unacceptable.

Practices falling into the latter category are thus banned, as they are contrary to the fundamental principles of the Union itself, while high-risk practices are severely restricted and regulated, as they entail a possible impairment of the health, safety, or fundamental rights of individuals.

Added to this are specific transparency obligations for certain AI systems, measures to support innovation, the establishment of governance systems at EU and national level, and the establishment of a framework for the creation of codes of conduct for non-high-risk AI system providers.

Penalties for using non-compliant technology can be up to 7% of turnover.
